Welcome To Better Movement

My name is Mary Derbyshire, and I am a movement and fitness coach and certified Alexander Technique teacher. I help people move with greater ease, balance, and confidence so they can reduce pain, improve mobility, and feel more at home in their bodies.

The Alexander Technique is a mindfulness-based approach to movement that teaches you how to move better, think more clearly, and reconnect with the natural coordination of your body.

What Is The Alexander Technique?

A Mindful Way To Move With Greater Ease, Balance, And Freedom

We all know that to improve and maintain health, we should exercise and move more, but what if pain, stiffness, and poor balance prevent you from doing so? How can you move more when everything about you is telling you to move less.

That's where I come in. I can teach you how to move better. When you move better, pain and stiffness go away, and your balance and coordination improve, and you also reduce stress and anxiety. This is a deep body/mind transformation.

I have taught the Alexander Technique for over 30 years, and I am passionate about my teaching.

I have worked with Mary for over 20 years. I came to her because of pain. She got me through knee replacements, back issues, and a number of aging issues. Thank you, Mary

I started learning the Alexander Technique to improve my flute playing. I quickly realized I wanted AT in all aspects of my life. Mary has made my music and my life much better.

Twenty-one years ago, I was diagnosed with PTSD from childhood trauma. People with PTSD are often left with bodies that are in a constant state of alert and overreaction. Mary's gentle and supportive touch quiets my nervous system and allows me to feel safe and secure, transforming hyper-vigilance into a sense of calm. Mary is helping me to teach my body to "lighten up". She is a skilled teacher whose approach, always kind and compassionate, makes this student feel at ease and respected. That is a beautiful gift.

What To Expect In A Lesson

An Alexander lesson is gentle, practical, and enjoyable. Using hands-on guidance and verbal cues, Mary guides students through basic movements such as sitting, standing, lying down, walking, and breathing.

Each private lesson lasts 45 minutes. Students are encouraged to wear loose-fitting clothes, socks, and a shirt or blouse with sleeves. Mary recommends creating calm space after the lesson so the experience can settle and resonate.
